Gisèle Pelicot Mural in Deptford

I just installed a new ceramic piece on a street in Deptford to celebrate Gisèle Pelicot’s courage in waiving her right to anonymity in the rape trial and challenging the perception of blame and shame that are placed on survivors of sexual violence by society. This extreme case brought to the fore the pervasiveness of sexual abuse and reminded us of the condition that patriarchal society offers us, it’s specific form of banality of evil, that is so hard to hold in one’s consciousness.

It is a piece for my community, here in Deptford, to celebrate and thank this inspiring woman, and offer solace to others seeking justice. It is a joy to use my skills to carry the message of dignity and recognition of women’s experience.

I am glad it is now completed; it is off my chest now. I hope you’ll enjoy seeing it around.
